Genealogy

The SCHS is a great place to start or continue research into your family history. Our collection includes printed genealogies, directories, and local histories, including published vital records, church records, and cemetery inscriptions.

The Genealogy Club meets the first Tuesday of each month (excluding July), at 10:00 AM at the Steele County History Center.

FREE for SCHS members. $5 for non-members.

The SCHS Genealogy Club welcomes back Leanne Cragun. Leanne will cover recent changes to family search, using the non-indexed records database as well as volunteering to be an indexer. There will be time for Q&A following the presentation.  Presenter:  Leanne Cragun

Researching at the County Courthouse

April 24, noon to 1PM (feel free to bring your lunch to this session)

Courthouse records contain information about your family from cradle to grave. Births, marriages, deaths, deeds, mortgages, wills, probate files and guardianship records can all be found at the county courthouse. Photographic Gems: Mining, Polishing, and Displaying Them

September 13, 7PM

Rick Swanson, Fox and Swan Arts, will discusses ways to discover previously unknown family photographs, and how to deal with those that are damaged or in poor condition. Tick will offer examples of how to use them to embellish your family tree and tell your family story. Bring your own favorite photographic gems and share your story of its discovery so others can learn from your success.

Case Study in Genealogical Problem Solving - Was that the right George W. Baker?

Participants will develop enhanced skills and tools for analyzing and comparing evidence to increase their success in solving genealogical identity problems. This presentation covers timelines, spreadsheets, comparison tools and more. Presenter:  Shirleen Hoffman, Hoffman Genealogy Services
